ZJU4H Medical Team Goes Global: Professor Tang Zhe's Team Performs High‑Difficulty Liver Surgeries in Bangladesh and Exports Two Chinese Technologies
On Chinese Doctors’ Day, a team from ZJU4H led by Professor Tang Zhe embarked on its first overseas medical mission to Bangladesh. Invited by the Bangladesh Surgical Society and the National Cancer Research Institute & Hospital, the team performed high‑difficulty liver cancer surgeries and shared Chinese expertise in both technology and hospital management.
Over two days, the team completed three landmark procedures: a 15‑cm giant liver tumour resection, the country’s first combined laparoscopic liver resection with ablation, and the first percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for liver cancer – all using Chinese‑made equipment developed with government support. More than 20 local experts observed live, with surgeries broadcast nationwide.
The patients, initially deemed inoperable, recovered successfully. Local surgeons praised the techniques as “amazing” and “a great inspiration.” Professor Tang also delivered a keynote lecture at Bangladesh Medical University, sharing over 20 years of clinical experience to an audience of 250 surgeons.
Beyond surgery, the team exchanged views on hospital management and presented a book on building new hospitals, offering a replicable “Chinese model.” Bangladesh has already expressed plans to send doctors to ZJU4H for further training.
This mission marks a significant step in exporting Chinese medical technology along the Belt and Road, demonstrating how high‑quality healthcare can cross borders to save lives and strengthen international cooperation.
