Chinese Technology Shines in Qatar: ZJU4H Team Invited to Top Middle Eastern Hospital for Live Surgeries and Academic Exchange

From December 22 to 25, a team led by Professor Zheng Yichun, Vice President of ZJU4H and Director of the Urology Centre, travelled to Qatar to perform live surgical demonstrations and deliver academic lectures at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) – one of the premier healthcare institutions in the Middle East.

As one of the first Chinese urologists to obtain a medical licence in Qatar, Professor Zheng brought advanced minimally invasive techniques to local patients, showcasing Chinese medical expertise on an international stage and further strengthening healthcare cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative.

HMC, established in 1979, manages a network of general and specialised hospitals and clinics across Qatar, renowned for its cutting‑edge technology and patient‑centred care. Professor Zheng’s team introduced the EP‑HoLEP (Enucleation Prostate Holmium Laser) technique – a state‑of‑the‑art procedure for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) that offers less bleeding, lower complication rates, and faster recovery compared to conventional surgery.

The team performed EP‑HoLEP on four Arab patients with severe BPH, all of whom had large prostates and multiple comorbidities, making them high‑risk surgical candidates. Using a precise “peeling” technique, Professor Zheng enucleated the hyperplastic tissue along the surgical capsule with holmium laser, then removed it through a morcellator – ensuring complete resection while preserving urethral function.

During each operation, Professor Zheng provided detailed, real‑time explanations in English – from identifying anatomical planes and adjusting laser energy, to haemostasis and urethral protection. His teaching style drew high praise from the observing surgeons.

Dr. Abdullah, Chief Medical Officer of HMC, commented: “Professor Zheng is one of the top urologists I have met – he not only operates skilfully but also teaches brilliantly, clarifying every step.” Dr. Ahmad Shamsodiki, Head of Surgery, added: “This exchange is immensely valuable – his refined techniques are worth adopting in our practice.”

On December 25, Professor Zheng delivered a lecture titled “Trends in Prostate Hyperplasia Surgery: Minimally Invasive Innovations & Future Directions” to over 20 urology specialists from HMC’s headquarters, surgical centres, and community clinics. The presentation covered technical improvements, case analyses, complication management, and long‑term outcomes, sparking lively discussion and applause.

Dr. Osama Abdeljallel, Director of Urology at HMC, said: “We are deeply grateful to ZJU4H and Professor Zheng for this wonderful experience. His surgeries and lectures have taught us a great deal, and we believe we will soon adopt this technique ourselves.”

From Yiwu to Doha, this cross‑continental medical mission not only demonstrated China’s advanced surgical capabilities but also embodied the spirit of shared care and international collaboration. Through this successful exchange, Professor Zheng’s team has laid a solid foundation for future technical cooperation and academic partnerships, contributing Chinese wisdom and innovation to global urological care.
