General Surgery

The Department of General Surgery at the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University comprises seven major subspecialties: hepatobiliary and pancreatic, gastrointestinal, thyroid, breast, vascular, colorectal, and hernia and abdominal wall. It serves as the deputy leader unit for standardized training in tumor ablation under the Chinese Medical Doctor Association and as the deputy chair unit for tumor ablation under the Zhejiang Anti-Cancer Association. The medical team includes 4 doctoral advisors, 13 senior-level professionals, and 12 associate senior-level professionals, with 100% of staff holding master’s degrees or higher. The department performs nearly 10,000 surgeries annually, with its expertise in complex radical ablation for liver cancer ranking among the best in the country. In addition to routinely performing high-difficulty procedures such as extended radical resection for liver cancer and combined organ resection for pancreatic cancer, the center extensively utilizes minimally invasive techniques, including minimally invasive resection and ablation for liver cancer, laparoscopic radical resections for gastric, colorectal, and pancreatic cancers; incision-free radical resections for gastrointestinal tumors; sphincter-preserving surgery for ultra-low rectal cancer; minimally invasive scarless thyroidectomy; endovascular repair of aortic dissection; and venous ablation procedures. The Center also maintains comprehensive collaborations with multiple Zhejiang University-affiliated hospitals in Hangzhou, numerous Grade A-level hospitals in Shanghai and Beijing, and several top-tier international hospitals in the United States, routinely conducting online multidisciplinary team (MDT) discussions for complex cases. In terms of research, center members lead multiple projects funded by the National 13th Five-Year Plan, the National Natural Science Foundation, provincial key R&D initiatives, and provincial key natural science projects, with total funding exceeding 10 million yuan. They have published over 100 international papers, many of which have an impact factor exceeding 20. The center is responsible for training Zhejiang University doctoral, master’s, and undergraduate students, and serves as a national-level surgical residency training base for standardized resident training.
