The Department of General Surgery at the Fourth Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine is  designated as a Zhejiang Provincial Key Clinical Specialty construction unit. It is also a standardized training base for tumor ablation of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, a Zhejiang Provincial training base for tumor ablation treatment technology, and the lead unit of the Tumor Ablation Committee of the Zhejiang Anti-Cancer Association. The department currently has 2 doctoral supervisors, 1 specially appointed researcher, 3 postdoctoral fellows, 13 faculty members with full senior professional titles (including professors), and 9 with associate senior professional titles. All staff members hold a master's degree or above.

The department performs nearly 10,000 surgical procedures each year. It routinely conducts highly complex operations, such as extended radical resection for liver cancer and combined multivisceral resection for pancreatic cancer, and widely carries out minimally invasive procedures, including minimally invasive resection and ablation of liver cancer, laparoscopic radical resection for gastric cancer, colorectal cancer, and pancreatic cancer, radical resection of gastrointestinal tumors without an abdominal incision, sphincter-preserving surgery for ultra-low rectal cancer, and minimally invasive scarless thyroidectomy. In particular, it is a national leader in radical ablation for complex liver cancer. To date, it has trained more than 50 specialists from nearly 10 countries, including India, Uzbekistan, the Philippines, and Russia. Experts form the department have traveled to Bangladesh, Uzbekistan, and other countries multiple times to perform surgeries. Each year, the department serves more than 1,000 international patients and performs nearly 100 surgical procedures for these patients. In research, members of the department have led multiple national and provincial projects and published more than 100 SCI-indexed papers. The department also trains doctoral, master's, and undergraduate students at Zhejiang University. As a national standardized surgical residency training base, it provides standardized residency training.
