The Department of Ophthalmology at Zhejiang University Fourth Hospital is a medical center within a large comprehensive hospital that provides high-quality, reliable care for eye diseases and optometry. Each year, it delivers over 120,000 outpatient visits, surgical procedures, and eye care services to adults, children, and adolescents.
The center currently features subspecialties including corneal and ocular surface diseases, cataracts, glaucoma, vitreoretinal diseases, refractive errors and strabismus/amblyopia, orbital and optic nerve diseases, oculoplastic surgery and ocular trauma, as well as dry eye and lacrimal duct disorders. Its medical services comprehensively cover internal ophthalmology, surgery, and preventive and rehabilitative care. The newly constructed 1,600-square-meter Ophthalmology Medical Center and Day Surgery Center is equipped with a multi-wavelength, multi-spot fundus laser, a fundus angiography machine, an OCTA (Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography) system, Optos wide-field fundus imaging system, Lenstar optical coherence biometry, UBM ultrasound biomicroscopy, fourth-generation frequency-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT), small-pupil fundus photography system, anterior segment YAG laser, corneal topography, Humphrey visual field analyzer, computerized refractometer, fully automated comprehensive refractometers, ophthalmic examination stations, and anterior segment photography systems. The operating room is equipped with surgical instruments such as ophthalmic surgical microscopes from Zeiss (Germany), phacoemulsification and vitrectomy systems, and endoscopes for orbital and lacrimal duct surgery. We perform refractive cataract surgery, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, vitreoretinal surgery, complex strabismus correction, endoscopic orbital tumor resection, orbital reconstruction and eyelid surgery, and comprehensive treatment for lacrimal duct disorders. Addressing eye health concerns of public and parents regarding visual development and refractive errors in children and adolescents, the department provides comprehensive medical services including myopia prevention and treatment, amblyopia rehabilitation, and visual function training, dedicated to serving the eye health of children and adolescents.
The Department of Ophthalmology currently comprises over 40 experienced clinical physicians, optometrists, and outpatient and surgical nursing staff. It is led by a professional team of six chief physicians specializing in corneal and ocular surface diseases, cataracts, glaucoma, vitreoretinal diseases, refractive errors and strabismus/amblyopia, as well as orbital and eyelid disorders. Our services include personalized cataract extraction combined with intraocular lens implantation, comprehensive early diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma, various glaucoma surgeries, the fitting of orthokeratology lenses (OK lenses) and comprehensive myopia prevention and control, surgical treatment of high myopia, treatment of age-related macular degeneration, anti-VEGF therapy, surgical treatment of diabetic retinopathy, diagnosis and treatment of complex corneal and ocular surface diseases, excision and reconstruction of orbital and eyelid tumors, and personalized treatment of dry eye and lacrimal duct disorders; The team has undertaken more than 20 research projects, including grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Provincial Natural Science Foundation, the Provincial Qianjiang Talent Program, and the Provincial Department of Science and Technology. Over 30 research findings have been published in leading international academic journals and applied in clinical practice, with some research achievements and technological innovations ranking among the most advanced in China. The team is responsible for clinical teaching for graduate and undergraduate students, as well as training for resident ophthalmologists from primary-care facilities, having cultivated a group of young ophthalmology professionals with excellent comprehensive qualities and outstanding technical skills.
