The Department of Emergency Surgery (Gastrointestinal Surgery) is a modern, innovative department that integrates the treatment of acute trauma with the diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal diseases and hernias. We are fully committed to establishing a discipline that ranks among the best in the province and leads the nation. Led by Director Zhao Zhongkuo, a renowned surgical expert, the department boasts five staff members holding associate senior titles or higher (including two PhDs), and 100% of our staff hold master’s degrees or higher. The department combines the rapid response capabilities of traditional emergency surgery with the specialized technical expertise of gastrointestinal surgery, dedicated to providing round-the-clock, one-stop, high-quality surgical solutions for patients with various gastrointestinal tumors, acute abdominal conditions, hernias, and abdominal trauma. The department extensively performs minimally invasive surgeries, including laparoscopic gastrectomy for gastric cancer, laparoscopic colorectal cancer resection, various hernia repairs, and sphincter-preserving surgery for low-rectal cancer, performing nearly 3,000 procedures annually. Department members lead multiple provincial-level and higher research projects and have published dozens of international papers. Additionally, the department is responsible for training doctoral, master’s, and undergraduate students at Zhejiang University and serves as a national-level surgical residency training base for standardized resident training.
