The Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery at the Fourth Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine is a modern, multidisciplinary unit integrating the management of major trauma, surgical acute abdomen conditions, gastrointestinal surgery, and hernia surgery. The department is committed to establishing itself as a top-tier discipline within the province and a leader nationwide. It seamlessly combines minimally invasive techniques in gastrointestinal and hernia surgery with rapid response capabilities for acute abdominal emergencies. The team provides round-the-clock, one-stop, high-standard care for patients with various gastrointestinal tumors, hernias, and acute abdominal conditions. Nearly 2,000 surgical procedures are performed annually.
The Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery routinely performs minimally invasive surgery for various benign and malignant gastrointestinal tumors, as well as critical gastrointestinal emergencies. Procedures include laparoscopic radical gastrectomy, laparoscopic left/right hemicolectomy, laparoscopic radical resection of rectal cancer (including low anterior resection with sphincter preservation), and laparoscopic resection of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST). The team possesses extensive experience in the surgical management of complex cases, particularly difficult intestinal obstructions. Additionally, the department specializes in minimally invasive repair for various types of abdominal wall hernias, including inguinal hernias, linea alba hernias, lumbar hernias, incisional hernias, and parastomal hernias, utilizing techniques such as Totally Extraperitoneal (TEP) and Transabdominal Preperitoneal (TAPP) approaches.
