Department of Rehabilitation Medicine

The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Zhejiang University Fourth Hospital specializes in a continuum of care spanning “acute-phase bedside rehabilitation—subacute-phase inpatient rehabilitation—recovery-phase outpatient rehabilitation.” Adhering to the philosophy of integrating prevention, rehabilitation, and treatment, the department provides comprehensive and full-cycle rehabilitation services. It serves as the Vice Chair unit for Geriatric Rehabilitation under the Zhejiang Provincial Society of Rehabilitation Medicine, and a standing committee member of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Branch of the Zhejiang Medical Association. The department currently employs over 40 medical and nursing staff, including 2 senior-level professionals, 1 associate senior-level professional, and 14 intermediate-level professionals; all physicians hold master’s or doctoral degrees. The department focuses on three major subspecialties: neurological rehabilitation, musculoskeletal pain rehabilitation, and respiratory rehabilitation. Its scope of practice includes rehabilitation for cerebrovascular accidents, traumatic brain injury, and spinal cord injury; post-fracture surgery rehabilitation; sports injury rehabilitation; rehabilitation for neck, shoulder, lower back, and leg pain; scoliosis rehabilitation; temporomandibular joint disorder rehabilitation; pelvic floor rehabilitation; critical care rehabilitation (tracheostomy, ventilator dependence, etc.), and pulmonary rehabilitation (COPD, aspiration pneumonia, etc.). Currently, the department offers a comprehensive range of therapies, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, dysphagia rehabilitation, cognitive rehabilitation, aerobic training, joint mobilization, ultrasound-guided myofascial release, and traditional acupuncture and physical therapy. The department is equipped with state-of-the-art international facilities, including: surface electromyography and gait analysis systems, computerized cognitive and language assessment and training systems, video laryngoscopes, the German Fizman swallowing and speech diagnostic and treatment device, high-flow respiratory humidification therapy devices, biofeedback analysis systems, upper limb functional rehabilitation robots, intelligent lower limb gait training systems, limb coordination trainers, cervical and lumbar traction units, extracorporeal shockwave therapy, interferential current therapy, ultrasound, laser therapy, vibrating mucus clearance devices, and traditional Chinese medicine steam therapy units. The Department of Rehabilitation integrates medical care, teaching, and research for comprehensive development. In terms of research, department members have led one National Natural Science Foundation project, one Zhejiang Provincial Natural Science Foundation project, one Zhejiang Provincial Department of Education project, and multiple projects funded by the Zhejiang Provincial Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. They have published numerous SCI-indexed papers and successfully organized multiple national and provincial continuing education programs in rehabilitation. The department also oversees clinical training for rehabilitation therapy students from Zhejiang University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Taizhou University.
