The Department of Ultrasound is a comprehensive clinical platform integrating diagnostic imaging, minimally invasive treatment, health screening, education, and research. The department has developed eight subspecialty teams covering abdominal, obstetric and gynecologic, interventional, cardiac, superficial-organ, vascular, pediatric, and musculoskeletal ultrasound. Its experienced physicians provide a broad range of ultrasound services for patients of all ages, from routine examinations to the evaluation of complex and uncommon conditions.
In addition to conventional ultrasound, the department offers advanced techniques such as contrast-enhanced ultrasound, three-dimensional and four-dimensional imaging, transesophageal echocardiography, right-heart contrast echocardiography, adult transcranial ultrasound, and dynamic musculoskeletal ultrasound. These technologies support the assessment of abdominal and superficial-organ lesions, cardiovascular and vascular diseases, fetal development, gynecologic disorders, pediatric conditions, and musculoskeletal or peripheral nerve disorders. The obstetric and gynecologic team provides first-trimester fetal structural screening, fetal echocardiography, assessment of singleton and multiple pregnancies, three-dimensional evaluation of the uterus and adnexa, endometrial receptivity assessment, pelvic-floor ultrasound, and postpartum abdominal-wall evaluation.
A major strength of the department is ultrasound-guided intervention, which combines real-time imaging with precise, minimally invasive care. More than 4,000 image-guided procedures are performed annually. Services include biopsy of lesions in the liver, pancreas, thyroid, breast, lymph nodes, and other sites; catheter drainage of fluid collections and abscesses; sclerotherapy for selected cysts; and microwave ablation for liver tumors and benign thyroid nodules. The musculoskeletal team also performs image-guided diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including selected pain-management and nerve-block interventions.
The department works closely with cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, thoracic surgery, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, reproductive medicine, and other clinical specialties to support coordinated decision-making. Standardized examination protocols, careful image interpretation, and patient-centered communication are emphasized throughout diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up.
The department is a national standardized residency training base, a key medical discipline in both Jinhua and Yiwu, a master’s degree training site of Zhejiang University, and a provincial training base for contrast-enhanced ultrasound. Over the past five years, its faculty have published 19 papers in SCI-indexed journals and undertaken one key research project at the provincial or ministerial level. The department also participates in a provincial multicenter prospective cohort study of elderly patients with aortic stenosis and collaborates with the Zhejiang Provincial Fetal Cardiac Ultrasound Diagnosis Technical Guidance Center. Through clinical innovation, professional education, and research collaboration, the department is committed to providing accurate, efficient, and compassionate ultrasound services to local and international patients.
