The Department of Oral Surgery at the Fourth Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine specializes in the surgical management of oral and maxillofacial diseases, with three subspecialties: dentoalveolar surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, and implant surgery. The department operates the Minimally Invasive Tooth Extraction Clinic, the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic, and the Implant Surgery Clinic, together with a dedicated inpatient service, providing an integrated pathway from outpatient minimally invasive procedures to major inpatient operations.
In minimally invasive surgery, piezosurgery, atraumatic extraction instruments, and controlled tooth sectioning with minimal ostectomy are used routinely for deeply impacted third molars, embedded and supernumerary teeth, ankylosed teeth, and retained or displaced roots, preserving alveolar bone and surrounding soft tissue as much as possible. Alveolar procedures, including ridge preservation, apical surgery, and autogenous tooth transplantation are also performed. For anxious patients, patients with special needs, and those with complex systemic conditions, extractions are carried out under intravenous sedation or general anesthesia.
In implant surgery, the department manages the full spectrum of alveolar bone deficiency, including severe bone defects. Guided bone regeneration, ridge splitting and expansion, transcrestal and lateral-window maxillary sinus floor elevation, autogenous block bone grafting, and soft tissue augmentation are performed routinely, with simultaneous or staged implant placement. Digital planning, surgical guides, and dynamic navigation support accurate, prosthetically driven placement, and the department provides immediate implant placement with immediate provisionalization, full-arch fixed rehabilitation for edentulous patients, and the management of peri-implant complications.
The inpatient service undertakes open reduction and internal fixation of complex, multiple, and panfacial fractures, including zygomaticomaxillary, orbital, and condylar injuries, with restoration of occlusion and facial contour; radical resection of benign and malignant tumors of the jaws and maxillofacial region with primary repair and reconstruction of the resulting defects; repair of cleft lip and palate, alveolar cleft bone grafting, and orthognathic correction of dentofacial deformities; and the systematic treatment of jaw cysts, salivary gland disorders, and temporomandibular joint diseases.
Individualized surgical planning, comprehensive preoperative risk assessment, standardized intraoperative technique, and structured postoperative follow-up allow the department to deliver safe, professional, and efficient oral and maxillofacial surgical care.
