The Department of Emergency Medicine at the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, backed by Zhejiang University, was established in October 2015. With the vision of “becoming a brand-name hospital with outstanding specialty care” and the mission of “promoting human health through high-quality integration of medical care, education, and research,” the department upholds the core values of “people-oriented, sincerity and excellence,” and upholding the spirit of saving lives and healing the wounded. Leveraging the hospital’s geographical location, the department integrates the strengths of multiple disciplines—including emergency medicine, internal medicine, surgery, and critical care medicine—to innovatively establish a comprehensive emergency department that integrates internal and external medicine, as well as an integrated emergency trauma care system. The department specializes in cardiopulmonary critical care, comprehensive management of severe trauma, emergency and critical care ultrasound, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support. It features a resuscitation unit equipped with state-of-the-art emergency facilities and possesses robust, integrated trauma care capabilities that cover the entire city and extend to surrounding areas. The department is capable of undertaking emergency rescue and medical support missions for various public health emergencies and serves as the designated hospital for traffic accident trauma care in Yiwu City.
The Department of Emergency Medicine at the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine is fully equipped with comprehensive functional units, robust technical capabilities, and advanced medical equipment. In addition to routine organ function monitoring and supportive measures, our department is proficient in performing a variety of advanced techniques, such as ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation), Resuscitative Balloon Occlusion of the Aorta (REBOA), various blood purification techniques, PICCO monitoring, bedside fiberoptic bronchoscopy, hypothermia therapy, bedside ultrasound, mechanical ventilation, and percutaneous tracheostomy. The Emergency Department utilizes an intelligent triage system to rapidly assess patients, ensuring timely and effective medical care; the emergency medical team is fully responsible for a comprehensive range of medical activities, including emergency treatment, hospitalization, surgical scheduling, consultations, and post-discharge follow-up.
The Emergency Department of the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine is a National Standard-certified Chinese Chest Pain Center, a Chinese Stroke Prevention and Treatment Center, a member of the Chinese Trauma Care Alliance and the Zhejiang Provincial Trauma Care Alliance, a Regional Center for the Treatment of High-Risk Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding, the Central Zhejiang Comprehensive Health Emergency Support Base (Poisoning), a member of the Chinese Air Ambulance Hospital Alliance, and an Aortic Dissection Treatment Center. Bed capacity includes 13 resuscitation beds, 20 observation beds, and 10 emergency intensive care unit (ICU) beds. The department employs over 150 specialized emergency medical staff, treats more than 200,000 emergency patients annually, and resuscitates over 14,000 critically ill patients each year. In the past five years, the department has successfully secured funding for seven provincial-level research projects, published more than 10 SCI-indexed papers, and filed 10 utility model patent applications.
The Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine has implemented blended online and offline teaching in pre-service training for new emergency nurses, as well as online teaching to enhance the comprehensive emergency response capabilities of pre-hospital emergency medical personnel. The department offers Zhejiang University MOOC courses such as “Fundamentals of Emergency Nursing” and “Clinical Emergency Skills and Techniques,” which realistically recreate common clinical emergencies in the emergency department.
