The Department of Mental Health at the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine was established in October 2014 with the aim of advancing humanistic psychiatry. In addition to traditional psychiatric approaches, the department places greater emphasis on addressing early-stage psychological issues, and the psychological well-being of special populations such as adolescents and pregnant women, to achieve early identification, diagnosis, and treatment. Building upon traditional pharmacological treatments, the department integrates psychotherapy and physical therapy, leveraging the strengths of a comprehensive hospital and coordinating multidisciplinary resources to provide the best possible care for patients.
The Department of Mental Health is equipped with advanced instruments and facilities, including a non-convulsive electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) machine, a repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) device, a sleep apnea monitor, a psychological stress analyzer, an acupoint regulation therapy device, a biofeedback therapy device, and a sandplay therapy room. The department also maintains an independent psychiatric ward.
The department maintains a long-term partnership with the State Key Laboratory at Zhejiang University, actively undertakes psychiatric education for Zhejiang University MBBS medical students, and has established a joint postgraduate training base with the Department of Psychology and Behavioral Sciences at Zhejiang University. These efforts ensure the discipline keeps pace with Zhejiang University’s “Double First-Class” initiative and international development. In 2024, the department was designated as a Model Center for Standardized Diagnosis and Treatment of Brain Health and Cognitive Disorders.
