The Blood Transfusion Department of the Fourth Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine (ZJU4H), provides clinical transfusion-related laboratory testing and therapeutic services. The department performs a comprehensive range of transfusion-related tests. Pretransfusion testing includes ABO and Rh blood-group typing and cross-matching to assess blood-group compatibility. Screening for irregular red-cell antibodies and the antiglobulin (AHG) test help detect antibodies that may affect transfusion compatibility or contribute to hemolytic transfusion reactions. In addition, platelet and leukocyte antibody testing is available to evaluate antibody-related transfusion risks. Thromboelastography (TEG) provides a holistic evaluation of coagulation and hemostatic function from clot initiation to fibrinolysis. The department also provides testing for hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN), which is critical for the timely diagnosis and management of maternal-fetal blood group incompatibility. Collectively, these tests provide important laboratory support for the selection of safe and appropriate transfusion strategies. With the Blood Transfusion Department at its core, ZJU4H has established a Transfusion Therapy Center to provide transfusion-related treatments. Current therapeutic services include autologous blood transfusion, which minimizes the risks associated with allogeneic blood exposure, and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, which utilizes the patient’s own platelets to promote tissue healing and reduce inflammation. By integrating transfusion-related testing and treatment, the department provides precise and safe transfusion care plans for patients. To support hospital-wide transfusion management, the department has established a transfusion information management system integrated with the hospital’s modern digital information platform. The system facilitates the management and use of transfusion-related information and supports coordination among relevant healthcare personnel. The Blood Transfusion Department obtained ISO 15189 laboratory accreditation in 2017 and has established a comprehensive quality management system. The department is committed to meeting the needs of clinicians and patients by providing safe, efficient, and high-quality transfusion services.
