The Transfusion Medicine Department at the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine was established at the hospital’s inception. After nearly a decade of development, it has built a high-caliber team of young professionals dedicated to clinical care, education, and research. The department currently employs eight technical staff members, including four with master’s degrees and two holding senior professional titles. The Department of Transfusion Medicine comprises four functional zones: the blood typing area, the blood storage area, the blood dispensing area, and the transfusion therapy area. It conducts a range of transfusion-related tests, including ABO and Rh blood typing, screening for irregular red blood cell antibodies, platelet and leukocyte antibody testing, thromboelastography, neonatal hemolysis testing, and cross-matching. Additionally, the department has established a clinician-friendly transfusion information management system that integrates with the hospital’s modern information platform. A Transfusion Therapy Center, centered around the Transfusion Department, has been established to provide transfusion-related treatments such as autologous transfusion and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, offering patients personalized, precise, and safe transfusion treatment plans.

In 2017, the department achieved ISO 15189 laboratory accreditation, making it the only transfusion laboratory in central Zhejiang to receive this certification. It currently serves as the Vice Chair unit of the Clinical Transfusion Working Committee of the Zhejiang Transfusion Association. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Transfusion Department (Clinical Laboratory Center) demonstrated outstanding performance and was honored as an “Advanced Collective in the Fight Against COVID-19 in Zhejiang Province.” The Party Branch of the Department of Clinical Laboratory, to which the Transfusion Department belongs, received honors including “Advanced Grassroots Party Organization of Zhejiang University” and “Vanguard Party Branch of the Zhejiang Provincial Health System.” This is a dynamic and vibrant team. We will unite in solidarity and forge ahead with determination to build a high-quality Transfusion Department with a strong humanistic ethos.
